Troop 1257 Policies and Guidelines
As a chartered organization of the Boy Scouts of America, Troop 1257 shall adhere to all policies and procedures set forth by BSA. In
addition, the Troop has established the following policies and guidelines. The purpose of these is to ensure a fun and safe Scouting experience for the boys and their leaders.
The Scout Oath and Scout Law define the character of a Scout and shall be followed at all times. A Scout who
fails to do so may be subject to a Scoutmaster conference, a conference with his parents,
or a temporary suspension from Troop activities.
Sign-off for rank requirements can be done by any
Scoutmaster or by a Scout who is First-Class or higher in rank. Occasionally, other
people, such as a school PE teacher, can sign-off on a specific requirement. Prior
approval from a Scoutmaster is required. Scoutmasters shall not sign-off on
requirements for their own sons.
Only Scouts who have successfully earned the Totin' Chip may carry and use
Knives on a campout or other Troop activity. Scouts
must follow all safety rules described in the Totin' Chip at all times. Only folding
knives with a blade length of 4 inches or less are allowed. No sheath knives. No
spring-opening knives.
Cell phones and other electronic
devices, such as iPods, MP3 players, Gameboys,
PSPs, DVD players, etc., are strictly prohibited during Troop meetings. They must be turned
off and remain out of sight during the meeting time. Violations of this policy
will result in the confiscation of the device without warning. If you must contact your Scout
during the Troop meeting, please leave a message and he will be able to access it
immediately after the meeting is over. The Scoutmaster's cell phone number is available
for emergency contact during meetings.
Electronic devices, such as iPods, MP3 players, Gameboys,
PSPs, DVD players, etc., may be brought and used in the car during travel to and from a campout.
However, they must remain in the car during the campout. Violations of this policy
will result in the confiscation of the device without warning.
When there is Inclement Weather, Troop 1257 follows the
Fairfax County Public
Schools in determining the cancellation of a weekly Troop meeting. If the FCPS are
closed, or close early, or cancel evening activities, then the Troop meeting is
cancelled. Cancellation of a weekend activity will be determined by the Scoutmaster
in charge of that activity.
